Born and raised on Long Island, New York - near enough to New York City to go to the Metropolitan Art Museum often in her teen years. exposed to so many fabulous museums, her artistic upbringing was not lacking in great artist influences. In fact, with an art history degree from Lake Forest College in Illinois, if asked to choose one artist or one style as her favorite, she would not be able to comply. In college, she avidly took classes at the Art Institute of Chicago; afterwards, the University of Arizona- Tucson, classes in both painting and drawing at U.M.-Missoula and U.M.-Billings, completing a B.A. in fine art and a M.S. in Education. The primary influence in her development as a watercolorist came from her first watercolor professor, Ben Steele of Billings. Living in Butte since the early '70's, she has painted the Butte architecture and surrounding landscape ever since. Sallie has continued workshops with a wide variety of private artists both in-state and world-wide. She loves travel and combining the artistic adventure: two months of Chinese landscape painting in China at the Zhejiang Fine Art Academy in 1985, Later on, travel workshops to France, Italy, Turkey, and Greece; painting and traveling independently, also to Israel, Jordan, Japan, Wales and England Following the China experience, Sallie was selected to paint an Easter Egg for the annual White House Easter Egg Roll in 1986. It resides in a collection at the Smithsonian. Selected through national competition, "Prince William Sound" a watercolor by Bowen, was chosen for a book cover for "Season of Dead Water" published by Breitenbush. Sallie continues painting in her studio and giving private classes. She has been a signature member of the Montana Watercolor Society since 1986 and has been accepted into their national juried shows more than any other artist, member or non-member. She has exhibited in juried shows throughout the United States as well.
