Broad Spectrum: Abundant Palette Exhibition

Thursday, December 26, 2024Monday, January 27, 2025

View Broad Spectrum: Abundant Palette December 26, 2024 through January 27, 2025 at the Carbon County Arts Guild & Depot Gallery. This exhibition features 34 pieces by 28 artists who are members of the Studio Arts Quilt Associates (SAQA) Montana/Idaho region.

Artists were invited to explore and interpret a variety of meanings, images, and experiences evoked by the theme, Broad Spectrum: Abundant Palette. From the submissions, esteemed artist and juror Patty Kennedy-Zafred selected work for the exhibition which is organized by the Carbon County Arts Guild & Depot Gallery with support for traveling through the Montana Art Gallery Director’s Association (MAGDA).

Studio Art Quilt Associates, Inc. (SAQA) defines the art quilt as “a creative visual work that is layered and stitched or that references this form of stitched layered structure.” And Broad Spectrum: Abundant Palette proudly represents the Montana and Idaho region of art quilters. The juror, Kennedy-Zafred says, “The submissions reflected a broad range of style, techniques, and materials, some pushing the boundaries of tradition, others using established materials in new and exciting ways and many expressing a thought, mood, or personal story.”

Some of the SAQA artists live in Montana or Idaho part of the year and in Arizona, Florida, or other places during the rest of the year. Kennedy-Zafred notes, “Realizing the geographic beauty of this region, it was not surprising to discover many artists who were informed and influenced by their natural surroundings and reflected this in their work.”

Artists in the Broad Spectrum: Abundant Palette exhibition include: Angela McPherson, Audrey Hyvonen, Brian Dykhuizen, Pat Budge, Cathy Calloway, Donna Deaver, Daera Leslie Dobbs, Joyce King Ferrie, Lisa Flowers Ross, Gina Gahagan, Sally K. Glutting, Maura Grogan, Ellen Herminghaus, Maggy Rozycki Hiltner, Linda Hughes, Monique Kleinhans, Cheryl Lipari, Christine Mullaney, Katy Kellogg Nygard, Susan Sawatzky, Marie Shirley-Jones, Sharon E. Stoneberger, Naomi S. Velasquez, Suzanne B. Warren, Pam Wells, Debra Zelenak, Peg Ziegler, and Heidi Ann Zielinski.

Each piece is an exceptional display of the talented artists we have in the Montana and Idaho area. Kennedy-Zafred shares her thought on this and states, “It has been my pleasure to spend time with all of this work, to imagine the intentions expressed, and delight in the creativity and beauty of each quilt.” In addition, she hopes that the artists in the show “develop renewed confidence, as they continue on their personal creative path.”

The exhibition is touring and sponsored by the Carbon County Arts Guild & Depot Gallery and MAGDA which is supported in part by grants from the Montana Arts Council, the Coal Tax Trust Fund for Cultural and Aesthetic Projects, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
