To celebrate the 2023 Art in the Beartooths, we chatted with our Quick Finish artists to get some insight into their backgrounds and creative processes. Here's what Mike Kosorok had to say about his art...
Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I was born in Red Lodge; hence, I became a landscape painter along with an abundance of historical subjects.
Who are your main artistic influences?
I was initially influenced by my father’s friends, mentored by Honorable Professor of Art Alice Ryniker, and then throughout the rest of my life by the transition of art and superb artists throughout history.
Tell us about your favorite medium.
I have worked in watercolor, drawing, cartooning, and oils. I prefer oils because of its richness and viscosity.
When is your favorite time of day to create?
I hope to remain inspired 24-7! I specify no specific time to have fun, especially fun in art. A veritable challenge along with creative inspiration!
Does art help you in other areas of your life?
I think that my art gift made me a better mathematics teacher. I was drafted during the Vietnam War, but because I could do commercial art, I was spared from doing some arduous training. Art is a worthwhile attribute to have in many professions. I have met some rather exceptional individuals in my life because of art.
