To celebrate the 2023 Art in the Beartooths, we chatted with our Quick Finish artists to get some insight into their backgrounds and creative processes. Here's what Dominique Paulus had to say about her art...
Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I was born in Paris, France, and grew up in N.J. next to N.Y.C. with a lot of exposure to many cultures & lifestyles...fueling a love of nature and yearning to study biology and Indigenous peoples.
Who are your main artistic influences?
My influences in techniques, lifestyles, subject matter, etc.- Robert Bateman, Carl Brenders, Guy Coleleach, Andrew Wyeth, Carl Rungius, Georgia O'Keefe, Manabu Saito
Tell us about your favorite medium.
My favorite medium is acrylic, which I use watered-down, building up colors in thin layers.
When is your favorite time of day to create?
Afternoon until dark. I only paint in natural light, since artificial, even full spectrum lighting, never seems to be accurate. I usually hike, bird, photograph in the a.m.
Does art help you in other areas of your life?
Yes. It influences how I see the world, triggering ideas, as the day unfolds.
