To celebrate the 2023 Art in the Beartooths, we chatted with our Quick Finish artists to get some insight into their backgrounds and creative processes. Here's what Diana Mysse had to say about her art...
Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
Montana is where I was born, and the big skies, prairies and mountains are my inspiration.
Who are your main artistic influences?
I have drawn since childhood, but my first painting instructor was Ben Steele at Eastern Montana College. I collect art books and appreciate the work of a wide variety of artists. My favorite oil painting workshop instructors were Louise Demore, Ralph Oberg, Ted Goerschner and Kenn Backhaus. I enjoy painting Plein air with the Montana Painters Alliance and my friend and mentor Jerry Inman.
Tell us about your favorite medium.
I have worked in different mediums throughout my career, but oil has been my favorite for the past 25 years.
When is your favorite time of day to create?
Morning and evening offer the best light, but anytime I’m outdoors with my easel and paints is a good day.
Does art help you in other areas of your life?
I see the world through the filter of art; it influences all areas of my life.
